July 4th Weekend at the Bennington Battle Monument: A three Day Celebration of History

Old Bennington VT:  A perfect way to enjoy a long weekend with three different activities on three different days at the Bennington Battle Monument.  On Friday, July 4th, there will be colonial games for children starting at 11:00 AM.  At 1:00 PM Willy Jones will give his traditional reading of the Declaration of Independence.  Following the reading enjoy musical entertainment with Bennington’s own Katie Beck and Jay Sager.  Refreshments can be purchased so bring chairs or a blanket and spend time on the lawn of the Monument.  The event is free and open to the public.

 

Saturday July 5th Virginia Meyer, will present Herbs in Colonial America, an illustrated presentation on the growing and use of herbs then and now. The Art of the Powder horn will also be featured; Peter Sansone will demonstrate the carving of his distinctively styled powder horns and the hand tooled leather bags they were carried in.  Time: 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM the event is free and open to the public

 

Sunday July 6th Vintage Voices Interpreters will present Fashionable Times and model their reproduction clothing spanning the decades. Over 20 hand made ensembles will be shown, including a riding habit, Satin Wedding Gown and several ball gowns.  A narration by Anne Bugbee will give a brief history of the outfits and their time period.  The fashion show takes place in the Old First Church Barn.  Time:  2:30 PM until 3:30 PM Refreshments will be available Admission is $5.00 for adults - $2.00 for children (6 through 14)

 

The Bennington Battle Monument is a Vermont State-owned Historic Site located at 15 Monument Circle in Old Bennington, Vermont,  just north of Route 9.  The Monument and Gift Shop are open daily from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM through October 31st.   For information call (802) 447-0550 or visit us online at www.HistoricVermont.org/Bennington
